Changing the lives of street and working children

Working with street and working children in Delhi since 1989, Butterflies believes in the right of every child to protection, respect, opportunities and participation in his/her own growth and development.

Programmes are carried out in 8 contact areas in Delhi at points where there is a high concentration of street/working children such as at bus terminals, markets or railway stations.

Their programmes, which reach out to 1,500 children, include education, health care, Children’s Development Khazana, Child Health & Sports Cooperative, Children’s Alternate Media (radio, theatre and newspaper), ChildLine (a 24x7 toll-free number for children in crisis) and a resilience centre, Butterflies School of Culinary and Catering (vocational skills programme), and night outreach.

Approach

Butterflies is committed to a non-institutional approach and follows the principle of democracy by promoting children’s participation in decision making as part of its programme planning, monitoring and evaluation.

By investing in a research, advocacy and training wing, and alliance building, Butterflies supports the mobilisation of civil society and influences policies at all levels.

A key feature of Butterflies approach is to give children a voice in decision-making and help children lobby for their own rights.
